I saw these very interesting little sea creatures last weekend at my oyster man and was intrigued. I’d never ever come across them so asked what they were and how you prepare them. He said they were similar to oursins in that you opened them up and ate the insides.
I’ve not actually been brave enough to try oursins, so will need to put this on the list of ‘be braver and try them and stop being such a wuss list’. There were not much left of the one box he had on sale, so they are obviously a popular if rare treat when they do come to the market.
I’ll let you know when I finally try them . . .
Update: Whilst picking up my Christmas Eve order this year I saw a box of Violets on the counter and asking what it tastes like, before I knew it the vendor had popped one in my mouth!!!
It was a lovely deep yellow egg-coloured scrambled egg texture, tasting utterly of the sea. Yum!
